Warriors eye shock mid-season coup

The Warriors are reportedly eager to sign departing Sharks halfback Chad Townsend before he makes his way north to the Cowboys next season.

The surprise move would see Townsend play out the remainder of the year with the Kiwi outfit before he joins North Queensland on a three-year deal in 2022.

Townsend has been relegated to the Sharks' feeder sign the Newtown Jets in the NSW Cup the past two weeks, with coach Josh Hannay preferring Matt Moylan and Shaun Johnson as the club's starting halves in first grade.

The Warriors are currently without star half Chanel Harris-Tevita who is sidelined with a pectoral tear and see Townsend – a former Warrior – as the perfect stop-gap to partner Kodi Nikorima in the halves.

The Daily Telegraph reports, Warriors coach Nathan Brown has personally spoken to Townsend about the move.

According to the report, The Sharks are considering the approach with the Warriors offering to pay the remainder of Townsend's salary of around $200,000.
