Sydney Swans star Callum Mills is under fire over a low blow on his opponent, with AFL great Dermott Brereton claiming Mills broke an "unwritten rule" in the game.
The incident occurred late in the first quarter of the Swans' 22-point win over the Blues at the SCG when Mills and Carlton defender Liam Stocker tangled on the wing.
Mills was awarded a free kick after being dragged down in a marking contest, but appeared to swing towards Stocker's groin while the Carlton defender stood up.
The 24-year-old's act did not sit well with Brereton, who was renowned for his own aggressive nature of play throughout his career.
"There is an unwritten rule in football — you get punched in the head, you get elbowed, all these things that are reportable," he told Fox Footy.
"You take it and you move on and say 'I hated that but we're all playing a man's game'.
"There are three things you don't do in AFL football, it's the unwritten code — you don't spit on your opposition, you don't kick your opposition, and don't whack him in the nurries. You just don't do it."
Mills was hit with a $1500 fine by the AFL for the incident, and he wasn't the only Swan to incur the wrath of the MRO, with teammate Sam Wicks fined $1000 after being charged with misconduct against Jacob Weitering.
The MRO also assessed the incident involving Lance Franklin and Nic Newman, but deemed that there was "insufficient force to constitute a reportable offence".
