Cowboys star facing prospect of early retirement

Cowboys co-captain Michael Morgan is reportedly staring down the barrel of an early retirement from rugby league after ongoing issues with a chronic shoulder injury.

The Courier Mail reports Morgan's career is at a crossroads following his latest injury setback which has ruled him out of Sunday's clash with the Gold Coast Titans at Queensland Country Bank Stadium.

It is understood the 2015 premiership-winner has two options ahead of him. He can persevere with the rehabilitation of his damaged shoulder in the hope it improves, or undergo another surgery which would likely close the curtains on his time in the NRL.

Head of football at the Cowboys, Michael Luck confirmed Morgan's troublesome shoulder was giving him problems.

Michael Morgan had a tricky 2019 campaign

"At the moment he is trying to get through this weekend and see how it goes for early next week," Luck told the Courier Mail.

"I don't want to make any comment on that (career threatening). We are all hoping that it settles down over the weekend and he's okay next week.

"He's had multiple surgeries on that shoulder so it's always going to be a problem for him.

"A lot of guys at the back end of their career are like that. I don't think he's extraordinary in that regard."

Morgan still has two-and-a-half years to run on his five-year deal worth one million a season.

An early retirement would leave the Cowboys with the prospect of a $2.5 million payout if he is forced to retire.

Morgan made only six appearances last year, undergoing a shoulder operation which resulted in an infection requiring more surgery.
