Kambosos reveals Russian secret weapon for title fight

George Kambosos believes if he claims the IBF lightweight title against Vasily Lomachenko in Perth on Sunday, it will make him the "greatest fighter this country has ever seen."

Kambosos, 30, will enter the ring for the first since his controversial victory over Maxi Hughes in July 2023, where he was awarded the IBO world title.

Lomachenko, 36, has not fought since a dubious loss to Devin Haney via unanimous decision in May last year.

Lomachenko and Kambosos were initially meant to face each other in 2022 for the unified championship, but the Ukrainian star chose to stay in his home country and fight with his compatriots in the war against Russia.

He's regarded as one of the most skilled boxers of his time but the three-time champion admitted he does not have much time left in his boxing career, and will have to assess how he feels after the Perth bout with Kambosos.

Speaking to 2GB's Wide World of Sports Radio, the Australian former world champion felt confident about his chances against the wily Ukrainian southpaw.

"We prepared very well. We brought in sparring partners from all over the world. We brought one over from Russia, he has over 400 amateur fights.

"He's the Russian Lomachenko 2.0. He gave me fantastic work."

Lomachenko previously held the WBA, WBC and WBO lightweight world titles, but was beaten by Teofimo Lopez in 2020.

Kambosos then caused one of the biggest upsets in the sport's history when he beat Lopez for the WBA, IBF, WBO and The Ring world titles a year later.

The Sydney-born fighter is adamant he has more in the tank than his opponent.

"He doesn't have the will or the dog inside him like I have right now. I'm 30 years of age I'm extremely hungry and I'm the underdog," Kambosos said.

"He's coming to my country and will try and take everything off me. I just feel right now coming off that very close loss to Devin Haney, he's not willing to go to the depths I'm willing to go."

He added: "This win will put the cherry on the top. I think it cements my legacy as the greatest fighter this country has ever seen.

"Having wins over Lopez and Lomachenko would be huge. To win another world title, that would make it seven. This would satisfy everything and the haters and doubters."
