Brisbane Lions defender Jack Payne has heartbreakingly failed his fitness test ahead of Saturday's preliminary final against Carlton, ruling him out for the must-win clash at the Gabba.
Darcy Gardiner replaces the key backman who is managing an ankle injury, who was all smiles leaving training on Thursday despite the news.
It comes as Carlton axed four for the match, their first preliminary final since 2000.

Matt Kennedy, Matt Owies, David Cunningham and Brodie Kemp have been dropped, with all four named as emergencies.
Jack Martin returns from suspension, while key forward Harry McKay also comes back from concussion.
Blues defender Jordan Boyd has been recalled, with youngster Ollie Hollands being elevated from substitute to a spot in the starting 22.
Jack Silvagni did not get a call up, despite passing his fitness test before their win over Melbourne in the semi final.
Meantime, Collingwood have stuck to their guns and selected young star Nick Daicos to make his long awaited return.
It means Taylor Adams (hamstring) has been ruled out, with the Pies veteran still holding out hope that he will be fit for a grand final appearance, should his side make it.
The Giants will enter their clash against Collingwood unchanged.
