Controversy rocks Wallabies-France Test

France got away to a rocketing start against Australia but were potentially aided by a forward pass being overlooked.

Already leading the Wallabies 8-0, the French piled more pressure on the hosts in the Suncorp Stadium clash when winger Gabin Villiere split through from 35 metres out in the 22nd minute to snare his second try.

The French flyer burst onto a short ball from inside centre Jonathan Danty and tore away to score under the posts, Australia helpless to hunt him down.

But Wallabies great Andrew Mehrtens questioned Danty's pass on Nine's coverage of the first Test.

"I thought that pass to Gabin Villiere was forward and it almost looked he had over-run it, which is why I think the Australian defence left him alone as he scored his second try," Mehrtens said.

"Anyway, the try stands and it's 15-0 France out of nowhere!"

Former Wallaby Morgan Turinui added: "Looked a little bit forward to perhaps my biased eyes."

However, Wallabies legend Tim Horan didn't see any issue with the pass.

"I thought that pass was all right and it stands, too," Horan said.

"Great little in-ball, that's fine."

France took a 15-7 buffer into the half-time break.
