Blues cop massive injury blow to co-captain

Carlton could lose their co-captain for the remainder of the 2021 AFL season after Sam Docherty underwent ankle surgery.

It was discovered Docherty, 27, suffered an acute syndesmosis injury after experiencing soreness in his ankle. Carlton sent him to a specialist and on Wednesday he had surgery.

The news is a major blow to Carlton, but they are not yet ready to officially rule him out for the year.

"This is clearly unfortunate news for Sam, who was really looking forward to helping the side put together strong performances in the back half of the season," Carlton's head of football, Brad Lloyd, said in a statement.

"Bad luck like this is never good to receive but at least by picking up the injury early we've been able to ensure we can get Sam on the road to recovery as quickly as possible."

The club said Docherty still has a chance to return in 2021, depending on how his rehabilitation progresses.
