Unwanted Shark drops NRL bombshell

Shaun Johnson has announced a shock move back to the New Zealand Warriors, less than three years after requesting a release from the club.

The 32-Test veteran was told recently his Cronulla contract wouldn't be renewed, leaving him on the lookout for a new club.

He's now confirmed a two-year deal with the Warriors, where he played 162 matches between 2011-2018.

"While he left to join the Sharks, Shaun's heart has always been with the Vodafone Warriors after starting his career here," said Warriors boss Cameron George.

"We're thrilled we're able to bring him home to again play in the Vodafone Warriors jersey in front of our members and fans at Mount Smart.

"Shaun stands among the top playmakers in the competition and he'll give us a significant boost from next season."

Just two weeks ago Johnson issued a plea for a club to offer him a deal for 2022, after kicking a match-winning field goal in Cronulla's victory over Penrith.

"If there are any clubs out there after a halfback, I'm your man," he said with a smile.

Warriors coach Nathan Brown said Johnson's signing is a massive boost for the club.

"Shaun's homecoming is hugely exciting for both the team and the club as a whole," said Brown.

"I know how much our club means to him and we also know how much he will bring to the side with not just his proven ability but also with his experience, leadership and the value he'll provide as a mentor for our halves."
