At this stage Gagai is still "expected to be well enough" to travel on Monday with the Maroons squad ahead of the Origin series opener at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville on Wednesday.

On Sports Sunday Billy Slater spoke about the lead-up for the Maroons as they juggle a few injuries including a knee complaint for AJ Brimson, which is expected to put Valentine Holmes into the fullback position.

"It's a really important [training] session for the Queenslanders today," Slater said.

"This is their main session and then they'll have tomorrow off and then move up to Townsville."
