Moto3 rider Jason Dupasquier is in a serious condition due to a crash at Mugello, in which he was struck by another bike after hitting the tarmac.
Dupasquier, a 20-year-old Swiss rider with PruestelGP, fell on the exit of turn nine near the end of qualifying. He was struck by the bike of Ayumu Sasaki, who was launched into the air and slid along the circuit after a heavy landing.
Dupasquier was attended at trackside by doctors and was later airlifted to a hospital in Florence.
MotoGP's FIM medical officer Giancarlo di Filippo said that Dupasquier was in a serious condition.
"Rider #50 Jason Dupasquier was involved in a very serious crash in Qualifying 2 of Moto3," di Filippo said in a statement.
"The FIM Medical Intervention team arrived immediately at the site of the accident. After that he was transferred in a hemodynamically stable way [stable heart/blood circulation] to the hospital in Florence.
"For the moment, we know that he's in a very serious condition and we are waiting for further updates by the hospital."
Sasaki escaped without serious injury.
"[Dupasquier] crashed in front of me, his bike came to the track and I couldn't avoid it. I hit his bike and had a very big crash," Sasaki said.
"Fortunately, I'm OK. I have some pain everywhere and mainly in my foot, but it's not broken."
Another rider, Jeremy Alcoba, was also caught up in the crash.
"When such things happen it's hard to speak about anything else. All I can say is that Jason can recover as quick as possible," Alcoba said.
"I didn't even have the time to realise how and why I crashed."
MotoGP Italy pole-sitter Fabio Quartararo dedicated his performance to Dupasquier.
"I want to dedicate this pole to Jason Dupasquier, who had a really bad crash earlier today. I hope that he's OK. I'm praying for him and his family," Quartararo said.
