NRL world melts for unseen father-son embrace

Rugby league, the hard-man's game, is synonymous with strength, grit and toughness.

But it's moments like this that show there's a whole lot more happening behind the gruff figures of the NRL.

It was one of the highlights of Magic Round when Eels coach Brad Arthur was seen cheering from the coach's box as son, Jakob, scored his match-sealing try on debut against the Warriors.

It'd be a heartwarming moment for any father, but it was made all the more special by the circumstances under which it occurred.

Arthur, 18, was forced to make an early debut for Parramatta following the suspension to playmaker Dylan Brown. He was thrust into the squad despite not training with the Eels' playing group all week due to the NRL's COVID protocols.

Playing at five-eighth, the young playmaker finished the match with a try assist, while also crossing to ice the game as his dad watched on.

The Eels coach was full of emotion, with cameras catching the moment he witnessed his son's first professional try. And that emotion spilled over behind the scenes as Eels players exited Suncorp Stadium down the tunnel in a moment that was captured on video by the club but was not released to the public until today.

In a touching moment, Arthur shares a proud, loving embrace with his son, fighting back tears as he meets his boy at the entrance to the Suncorp Stadium dressing room.

It's a rare sight to see the typically stern Arthur clearly overcome with emotion, and the NRL community have flocked to Twitter to celebrate the moment.

Parramatta legend Peter Sterling was equally won over by the Arthurs' special moment, and celebrated it as the highlight of Magic Round.

"You could just see the joy on everybody's face," Sterling told Wide World of Sports' Sterlo's Wrap.

"Certainly his own, but also his teammates, he's a popular young man and he's got some qualities about him.

"And from Dad, that's great. He would be celebrating like that for any try at that stage. But to see your son do that, and the Parramatta fans knowing how significant that moment was, it was wonderful. That was just a great moment from the weekend."
