This man could be NRL's buy of the season

Melbourne Storm's Nicho Hynes could be the buy of the season for a rival NRL club, rugby league great Peter Sterling says.

Hynes is primarily a fullback but has aced a number of positions for the Storm. He handled five-eighth with aplomb last weekend in a win over the Dragons, running a game-high 225m while making two try assists and four line break assists.

Hynes is off-contract at the end of the season and said after his Magic Round performance: "I have been pretty vocal that I want to be a starter. Whether it is with this club or it might have to be somewhere else, we will just have to wait and see."

Sterling said that Hynes, touted as a potential Broncos signing given that he's currently a back-up in Melbourne, would be a strong acquisition. He said that the 24-year-old would come at a fair price and only improve.

"The secret to the salary cap is to buy value for money. He's adding to his value every week, is Nicho Hynes, but you still are getting him at a good price," Sterling said on Wide World of Sports' Sterlo's Wrap.

"He's only going to get better and it would astute buying, I think, if you were able to get him to your club – a club – that were in need of a No.1. But somebody who can play six, who can play three and four, who can anywhere for you and has come through a great system.

"I don't want to get offside with the Melbourne Storm in farming out their players but if I were at another club and I'm looking for a particular type of individual that's going to cost the right price, Nicho Hynes might just be the man."

Hynes dominated play and even produced what Sterling called a "Cooper Cronk-ish" cross-field kick for winger George Jennings late in the game. The four-time Parramatta Eels premiership winner said that Hynes had genuine playmaking skills.

"We said before the game, you watch Nicho Hynes play and he's got that five-eighth play about him," Sterling said.

"You can see it in him. He's a good ball-player, he's got good speed and he's got great awareness. I thought he was the best player on the field."
