Broncos make history in staggering comeback

Brisbane have completed the biggest comeback in the club's history, coming from 22-0 to cruise home in the South Queensland derby.

The Gold Coast Titans shot out of the blocks and were nine points ahead of the clock when Tyrone Peachey scored in the 13th minute.

And while at that point statisticians may have been frantically looking up the Broncos' biggest-ever loss, it ended up being a positive record-breaking night instead.

The Broncos' previous biggest comeback was 18 points against Canberra in 2006, and the win over their little brothers was their first over any opposition other than Canterbury since the coronavirus pandemic shut the competition down early last year.

It's a huge win for the Broncos, and despite a late Mitch Rein try it's an eight-point margin of victory for Kevin Walters' men.

After the whirlwind start from the visitors, Brisbane pulled tries back through Herbie Farnworth and Jamayne Isaako – and a longshot comeback attempt started to firm to reality after AJ Brimson was sin-binned just before the half-hour mark.

Brisbane go 90 metres in stunning try

The Broncos used their man advantage brilliantly and it was 22-all when the teams headed to the sheds, including a superb 90-metre try capped off by Xavier Coates after some brilliance from Isaako and new halfback Tyson Gamble.

Not content with a 90-metre try in the first half, Brisbane went the length again after the restart – this time through winger Corey Oates.

He stuck his left hand up to snag an unlikely intercept on Ash Taylor's massive cut-out ball and looked 100-1 to catch it, but after about four juggles it stuck and he was off down the wing.

Beau Fermor valiantly gave chase but the big winger had too much toe and Brisbane now had a lead they wouldn't relinquish, a Jesse Arthars try and a penalty goal padding the lead to 14.

David Fifita had two tries disallowed in the final 10 minutes but Rein's consolation meant it was a 36-28 win for the Broncos.

Proctor opens the scoring in quick fashion

It was a sorely needed win for Brisbane, who've pulled clear of the bottom two on the ladder, and a promising season for the Titans has fallen into chaos, who have now lost three in a row, and four of their last five.

"It's been tough, we've put in performances for 20, 30, 40 minutes – and we still didn't put in an 80-minute performance, but after that first 20 we stuck to our guns," Oates said post-match.

And while Brisbane are circling around unsettled Rabbitohs half Adam Reynolds, the new pairing of Gamble and Anthony Milford finally gave the Brisbane faithful something to believe in.

"It could have been one of those games where we down 40 by full-time, but we dug ourselves out of that hole," Milford said.
