Deal done as McGuire exits Cowboys

Prop Josh McGuire could line up for St George Illawarra as soon as this Sunday after agreeing to terms on an immediate switch.

As first reported by Wide World of Sports, McGuire, who had recently ruffled some feathers at the Cowboys, will now depart North Queensland with hopes of making an immediate impact at the Dragons.

The 31-year-old will once again link up with coach Anthony Griffin, with the pair having worked together previously at the Broncos. The prop joins Ben Hunt, Corey Norman and Andrew McCullough, who all had prior dealings with Griffin before they joined the Dragons.

A mooted swap deal also involving Dragons halfback Adam Clune hasn't yet transpired.

The Cowboys are in need of halves due to the Michael Morgan retirement and the expected departure of Jake Clifford but if Clune is to make the move north it is unlikely to happen before Ben Hunt returns from injury.

Morgan was kept out of contact work at training before flying to Brisbane last week to see a shoulder specialist, where he was given the bad news.

"This is not the way I envisioned my career finishing, but I'm retiring knowing I gave myself every opportunity over the last 12 months for my shoulder to be strong enough to continue playing. Unfortunately, the end result was out of my control," Morgan said.
