Jarryd Hayne's individual accolades are on the verge of being stripped following his sexual assault conviction.
The former NRL star was found guilty of two counts of sexual intercourse without consent last week, with a sentencing hearing scheduled for May 6 in Newcastle.
Hayne has made it known that he intends to appeal the conviction but should he be unsuccessful, NRL officials believe they will have no choice but to strip the 33-year-old of his rugby league honours, according to Nine NRL reporter Danny Weidler; writing in his Sun Herald column.
A judge told the former Eels player last Monday that jail time is "inevitable" following his convictions.
It's understood the game wants to completely distance itself from Hayne, so that the prestige of the Dally M Medal and the Brad Fittler Medal aren't damaged.
Hayne's list of achievements includes: Two Dally M Medals (2009, 2014), Rookie of the Year in 2006 and three Brad Fittler Medals (2007, 2008 and 2014).
But the decision could be met with some resistance after Dally Messenger III, grandson of the rugby league Immortal, said Hayne's NRL achievements should stand.
"I think the punishment Jarryd receives from the law and from the NRL is enough," he told Weidler.
"From my point of view, his achievements should not be wiped from history and his name should still be present on the awards he has won. In no way am I condoning anything he has done or is alleged to have done. What he did in sport should not be taken away."
