AFL blockbuster forced out by Brisbane lockdown

The AFL's Round Three Lions vs Collingwood match has been moved to Marvel Stadium due to Brisbane's COVID-19 lockdown.

The match will be held on the same day and at the original time, Thursday April 1 at 7.40pm AEDT, yet will now be in Melbourne rather than at the Gabba.

The Round 22 Magpies vs Lions match originally scheduled for Marvel Stadium will now be at the Gabba.

The AFL confirmed the move after the Queensland Government announced a three-day lockdown.

"In the interest of the health and safety of both clubs and the wider community we have made the decision to move the match to Marvel Stadium," AFL general manager broadcasting and clubs Travis Auld said in a statement.

"Marvel Stadium was the scheduled venue for the return match between these two clubs later in the season, which made the decision to switch the venues as per the fixture the appropriate choice.

"As we continue to navigate the ongoing pandemic, we are constantly ensuring we have the contingencies in place to best combat any challenges that are presented."

Fans who bought tickets for the Gabba fixture can use them for the Round 22 match or get a full refund. Tickets for the new Marvel Stadium fixture will go on sale tomorrow.

The Brisbane lockdown begins at 5pm on Monday night, after four locally-transmitted cases of the highly-infectious UK strain of COVID-19 were detected.

The Lions were forced to remain in Melbourne after a Friday night loss to Geelong. They may be stuck there longer if the Brisbane lockdown does not reap the desired result.

Brisbane have started the season 0-2 despite being premiership fancies. Nathan Buckley's heavily-scrutinised Collingwood side are 1-1.
