Gould's ominous Titans warning as on-field woes continue

Phil Gould believes Gold Coast is still 15 to 20 years away from being the powerhouse it could be in the NRL amid a constant struggle for success.

Under new coach Josh Hannay, the Titans have started with two losses in a row despite brilliant pre-season form.

The 18-14 loss to the Dolphins in round two was more promising for the club after a 50-10 flogging from the Sharks to start the regular season.

However, that first round loss sparked usual questions around the Titans and whether it can be a successful franchise after failing to cause shockwaves since inception.

Perth Bears coach Mal Meninga previously worked at the Titans in a culture and performance role and was a guest on Nine's 100% Footy.

Meninga said it would take "belief" for the Titans to breakthrough as a quality team.

"It's just perseverance, time, effort and belief in what they're doing," he said.

With the Titans starting in 2007, Gould believes the Gold Coast itself was "before its time" in terms of how the city has grown since the club's inception.

"You look at the Gold Coast now, from Brisbane down to probably Byron Bay, there's a five-lane highway either way, it's chockablock every day and the residential growth between those two areas has been phenomenal," he said.

"I think their greatest period is going to be in 15 to 20 years time. It's what they create between now and then to take advantage of all that and every kid wanting to aspire to be a Gold Coast Titan at the moment."

"It was very transient … but now it's building its own population. You look at the residential growth between Brisbane and Byron Bay, it's phenomenal.

"It's going to be such a huge area, and that's when they're going to hit their straps … I think it's got its best in front of it."
