Rattled Cleary ruled out for grand final rematch

The Penrith Panthers have announced that star playmaker Nathan Cleary will not play in Thursday night's grand final rematch against Melbourne Storm.

Cleary left the field late in the second half on Saturday and did not return after copping a high shot from Dallin Watene-Zelezniak during Penrith's win over the Bulldogs.

The 23-year-old passed his HIA at the time but with a short turnaround to get ready for a grudge match with the Storm, the halfback won't be risked.

Panthers coach Ivan Cleary will confirm his squad 60 minutes before kick-off.

The Panthers coach may elect to place Tyrone May in the halves alongside Jarome Luai, or young gun Matt Burton – who's been anxiously waiting for more time at first grade after signing a Bulldogs contract for next season – could be called up.

Burton was one of the Bulldogs' first signings under new coach Trent Barrett, agreeing to head to Belmore for the 2022 season. With Burton's path to first grade blocked by Cleary, Luai and May at Penrith, he has started the season in reserve grade despite reportedly training well with the side.
