This raw photo broke the hearts of NRL fans

We've only had two rounds of football this season, but it's doubtful we are going to see a more emotional photo in 2021 than the one here.

It shows the heartbreaking moment when Manly forward Andrew Davey is given the news that he has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament during the loss to South Sydney last Saturday night.

The injury has ended Davey's season – and put his future in the game in doubt.

Distraught after putting in the hard yards all summer and winning a first grade spot at his new club, Davey's season was cruelly cut short in an awkward tackle and he hugs a mate in the Brookvale sheds as he is given the terrible news.

At 28, Davey was the fourth-oldest debutant in the modern era when he played his first game for Parramatta last year and has vowed to fight his way back next season.

"I'm not really sure how to feel just yet. I'm waiting for it all to sink in and become real," Davey said on an Instagram post accompanying the photo.

"From one mental battle to another.

"I don't think this is any different to anything else I've overcome to get here. This battle is just between me and my body, I don't need to change anyone's mind or prove anything more. Just like those hurdles, I'll get over this one just as strong as I did the others.

"Everybody suffers a loss from time to time, it's the person who can overcome a loss and make a success of themselves that's really doing something special."
