St George Illawarra are reportedly considering a shock play for out-of-favour Cronulla Sharks star Andrew Fifita.
Fifita has found himself on the outer under coach John Morris' reign, confined to reserve grade with Cronulla's feeder club Newtown Jets for the past three weeks.
But it appears the premiership-winning prop's fortunes could soon change with the Dragons reportedly interested in luring the 31-year-old to the Red V.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports the Dragons are closely monitoring the situation with Fifita at Cronulla.
Fifita was also spotted talking to Dragons coach Anthony Griffin for some time before a NSW Cup game a fortnight ago.
The 2016 premiership-winner has an existing relationship with Griffin, stretching back to their time together with the Tongan national team.
The Australian's Brent Read also claimed Griffin was keeping close tabs on Fifita's situation.
"The Dragons are keeping a watching brief on Andrew Fifita," Read told Fox Sports' NRL 360.
"He's got a relationship with Anthony Griffin. He coached him at Tonga. They caught up a couple of weeks ago when Andrew played for Newtown. The Dragons have got interest there."
Fifita has struggled to rediscover his best form in recent years after a series of knee and mobility issues.
He recently stipped off over 20-kilos in the off-season in a bid to revitalise his career.
