'I wasn't calm': Inside little-known Aussie's shock upset

Joe Comito is still soaking in the glory of his remarkable upset at the Darts World Championship and admitted he was the opposite of his seemingly calm demeanour.

The 44-year-old Australian stunned European champion Niko Springer 3-1 in the first round of the event at London's Alexandra Palace – better known as "Ally Pally" to fans.

Springer failed to close out with the fourth set in the balance and it was over to Comito, who missed his first attempt at a double-10 before hitting the second.

Comito then slumped to the floor in disbelief as the crowd erupted.

Speaking to Nine's Today, the little-known Aussie explained what was going through his mind when the fourth set was on the line and a decider was on the cards.

"You just want to get it over with," Comito said.

"He's under more pressure than me, he's a name player and a big player. He just won the European title not long ago, he was the one with all the pressure.

"I looked calm, but I wasn't."

Comito has now advanced to the final 64 of the tournament and while he faces an uphill battle to go all the way in a star-studded field, that won't deter him yet.

"You've got to take it a game a time – don't look too far ahead, because you never know what's gonna happen," he said.

As for the rowdy crowds – often full of beer – Comito heaped praise on the atmosphere.

"It's getting huge and just like their football in England, they've got great songs and they really get behind everything," he said.

Comito's win over Springer wasn't the only major upset, with Kenyan debutant David Munyua defeating world No.18 Mike de Decker in what was described by commentator John Part as "one of the greatest moments you will see on any sporting stage."

Munyua fell two sets behind but surged back to take out a five-set thriller.
