The summer cricket experience that's much more than a game

Australia's summer of cricket is a cherished tradition, a spectacle of skill and strategy that has captivated us and lived in our hearts and minds for generations. While the Big Bash League (BBL) may feel like a world away from the test format of the game, it has carved out its own unique place in the pantheon of Australian sport. It offers pure escapism in a high-quality contest between bat and ball that celebrates everything we love about a big day (or night) out.

This is a sporting experience that guarantees a good time for both avid cricket fans and families alike. The atmosphere is electric, with non-stop action on the field and an array of entertainment (outside) off of it. The Melbourne Stars are the team leading this charge, turning a match into a full-blown event at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The fun begins in the family-friendly fan zone in Yarra Park, where you can meet the team mascots, enjoy live entertainment, and even cash in on the prize giveaways. Here tens of thousands of fans gather on one of the long, balmy summer evenings Melbourne is famous for. This atmosphere almost feels entirely new — and a far cry from the cricket of a bygone era.

T20 has revolutionised cricket by creating a high-energy atmosphere that appeals to a new generation of supporters and families, as the action never lets up and is largely driven by the stars who lead one of this year's teams to watch.

The Stars in our eyes

With the Big Bash season just around the corner, giant-hitting, mega-profile players like Aussie superstars Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis will take the field and lead the Melbourne Stars into battle.

The Stars are the team everyone wants to beat — probably because they're capable of absolutely anything. Supporting them are local crowd favourites, including bowling star Peter Siddle — who's still a Victorian hero at 40 years old, and Australia's most under-rated bowler of all time, Scott Boland ("build the man a statue" anyone?). There's more too — like Pakistani quick (and fan favourite) Haris Rauf, alongside Aussie cricketers Hilton Cartwright and Mitch Swepson.

The Melbourne Stars have all the momentum in BBL coming off the back of last year's big five-win finish to reach the BBL finals. And there are only four chances to see them play at the MCG this summer, starting on December 18 with a huge show-down against last season's BBL champions, the Hobart Hurricanes (where kids go free!).

Wondering how to pass the time after the end of day's play on the Boxing Day Test? There's plenty more to come in Melbourne. This summer cricket spectacle and hype machine continues into the starry night, with the BBL promising non-stop massive-hitting action that's all done in under four hours. You'll be thoroughly exhausted… guaranteed.

The action never stops! The Stars' four-game home stand kicks off with a showdown against the Hobart Hurricanes on December 18 and the Melbourne Derby between the Stars and Renegades on January 4. Don't miss a moment of the huge hits, live music and family fun. Kids get in for free for the first match! Click here for more information.
