NSW Blues collapse leads to unwanted record

The New South Wales Blues became just the seventh team in the history of the Sheffield Shield to claim an unwanted record, losing their first three wickets without scoring.

NSW have stumbled to 5-17, with Sydney-born Jackson Bird doing the bulk of the damage for the Tasmania Tigers.

The Blues still need ten more runs to avoid the lowest Shield score in history – set by South Australia against NSW in 1955.

The Blues will be battling to avoid a follow on, after Tasmania set them a first-innings target of 333. Test skipper Tim Paine topped the score with 87, while Bird chipped in with a half century.

Bird had Daniel Hughes and Daniel Solway both trapped LBW in the space of three balls in the opening over of the innings, before getting Kurtis Patterson to edge one to Paine in his next over.

Peter Siddle grabbed his first wicket, getting Jason Sangha caught behind, before the Blues lost their fifth – and Bird's fourth – just before lunch.
