Condoleeza Rice: Next head coach of Cleveland Browns?

In this Jan. 14, 2016, file photo, former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice speaks during a luncheon at the NCAA Convention in San Antonio.

She’s used to tackling tough issues at the White House, but can Condoleezza Rice do the same in the NFL?

According to

ESPN

, the Cleveland Browns are interested in interviewing the ex-U.S. Secretary of State for a head-coaching position with the team.

Should it be true, Rice would become the first woman to interview for the major role in the football league’s history. The NFL currently has

three female assistant coaches

: Katie Sowers (San Francisco 49ers), Kelsey Martinez (Oakland Raiders), and Jennifer Welter (Arizona Cardinals).

In an interview with the sports media outlet, Browns GM John Dorsey said he was open to hiring a woman as the Brown’s next head coach. The position opened up after former head coach Hue Jackson was turfed Oct. 29.

In a statement to The Associated Press, Dorsey praised Rice as a “great leader” and he has “the utmost respect and admiration for all she’s accomplished.”

However, Dorsey noted the Browns organization is still compiling a list of coaching candidates and “Secretary Rice has not been discussed.”

A source told ESPN is interested in talking to Rice  — a big fan of the Browns — to see what she can offer to the coaching gig and the team as a whole.

“She’s an amazing person,” the source said.

Rice served as 66th Secretary of State of the United States from 2005-09. After leaving the world of politics, Rice became involved in the world of sports, serving as a member of the

College Football Playoff Committee

and chairing the

Commission on College Basketball

.
