I've just read a legendary account of back-up catcher Doug Mirabelli being traded to the Boston Red Sox and flown from coast to coast that same day as the solo passenger in a private jet, then being escorted via police cruiser to the stadium, all to defeat the Yankees in an early season regular game. That got me thinking: what are some other fascinating stories of last minute replacements in sports history? The only other one that comes to my mind is Scott Foster winning his sole game as emergency goalie for the Blackhawks.
