Desperate Manly swoop for bizarre signing

Manly's desperate plight has been shown by the Sea Eagles signing Warriors hooker Karl Lawton immediately – despite the fact he is set to miss the majority of the season with an achilles injury.

The Warriors have given Lawton an immediate release and he has signed a two-year deal with Manly – but won't make his debut until he is over the injury which will be mid-season at best.

The Sea Eagles were thumped by the Roosters in their opening game of the season last night and used a makeshift hooker in Lachlan Croker.

The club has a top-class hooker on its books in youngster Manase Fainu but he has been stood down indefinitely by the NRL over an off-field incident.

Lawton, aged 25, hails from the Gold Coast area and played for the Titans in 2016-17.

He shifted to the Warriors in 2018 but injuries have restricted him to just 33 games over the past three seasons.

He suffered the achilles injury just before Christmas last year, meaning he will miss much of the coming season.
