Manly coach Des Hasler says he feels "sorry for the fans" after his side was thrashed 46-4 at the hands of the Sydney Roosters.
The Sea Eagles conceded nine tries to the Tricolours who were unstoppable today at the SCG, with James Tedesco and Brett Morris both notching hat-tricks.
Manly, who were without superstar fullback Tom Trbojevic due to a hamstring injury, looked sharp early on when Reuben Garrick found the line in the 9th minute to level scores.
The first 20 minutes of the match saw Manly with a number of attacking opportunities, but a total of 14 errors for the match proved costly as the Roosters ultimately made the Sea Eagles pay the full price. Manly finished the match with just a 67 per cent completion rate.
Hasler admitted after the match the Sea Eagles underperformed before urging his side to do better for the club and its supporters.
"First game of the year, you expect a better result and performance," Hasler told reporters.
"I thought our edges, defensively we missed too many tackles.
"I thought in the middle we were matching it. I thought we did pretty well there.
"I feel a bit sorry for the fans in particular.
"We need to give a better account of ourselves individually and for the club and the fans. We need to make that pretty quickly."
Hasler also said his side has a lot to work on defensively.
"I think defensively across the park we need to be better," he added.
"We let them out of their own end far too easily, we need to be better."
