Brimson cleared after probe into bet slip photo

The NRL has cleared Gold Coast player AJ Brimson of any wrongdoing after investigating a photo of a suspicious bet slip.

The Titans confirmed the news on Thursday.

"The Titans can confirm following all relevant enquiries relating to a social media post on AJ Brimson's Instagram account, the NRL has found no evidence to indicate Brimson has breached the gambling provisions of the NRL code of conduct," the club said.

The Titans utility posted to Instagram following last week's Melbourne Cup with a screenshot of a Sportsbet account.

Brimson, 26, wrote "see you at Pav" and boasted about winning big on the Melbourne Cup.

According to the photo the bettor had put $100 on Knight's Choice to win the Cup at $101, netting a $10,100 payout.

But Brimson deleted the photo soon after when people pointed out the two bets that were pictured underneath.

Someone had attempted to wipe out the two bets but enough of the text was showing to suggest the account had been betting on either rugby or rugby league games.

From the visible text it appeared he had been betting on first tryscorers.

Brimson's manager Jim Banaghan said the bet was placed by a family member but could not explain why his client had posted the photo to his social media.

"A family member sent it to him, he copied it and posted it," Banaghan told the Sydney Morning Herald.

"I have the whole [text] conversations [with the family member], they will be sent to the [NRL] integrity unit and it will all be hit on the head straight away.

"I've given it to the CEO of the club and he has given it to the integrity commission.

"There's nothing to it … it was all a bit of a wind-up and it has just backfired."

People registered with the NRL – including players – are not allowed to bet on rugby league games.

The last NRL player to be banned for betting on games was Tim Simona of the Wests Tigers in 2017.
