Insane buy breaks NBA basketball card record

A sports card collector has forked out close to $5.93 million on a rookie card of Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic, breaking the record for the biggest sum ever paid for a basketball card.

The card was sold to a collector and investor who shattered the previous record, with LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo cards last year fetching $2.32 million and $2.34 million respectively.

The Doncic card, made by Panini America, who is the current leader in NBA card manufacturing, is a 2018-19 National Treasures Luka Doncic Rookie Auto Logoman 1/1.

Panini currently produces many variants of rookie cards for players, but this card in particular is a 'one of one' and comes from the 'National Treasures' collection, which is one of the more expensive basketball card sets where fans spend their money.

The transaction was confirmed today on Instagram, with a picture of the invoice and cheque Bolillo Lajan San, who has more than 15,000 followers and describes himself as a collector/investor.

The caption of the Instagram post read: "I have to make it public.

"Many heard there was a deal brewing since back in November of 2020 for the 2018-19 National Treasures Luka Doncic Rc Auto Logoman 1/1.

"Even though there was a few adjustments to the sale price since then, today my new business partner/friend and I have finalised the deal at (USD)4.6 million for the card."

Since making his NBA debut during the 2018-19 NBA season, Doncic has emerged as one of the biggest superstars in the league.

To date, he's earned two All-Star selections, one NBA all first-team selection and was crowned Rookie of the Year in 2019.
