'Huge one': Aussie's dream run dashed by massive crash

Will Power's hopes of a second Indianapolis 500 have been dashed after he crashed heavily with a little more than 50 laps to go.

The Team Penske driver was running 15th when he got loose trying to pass Chip Ganassi Racing's Christian Rasmussen.

The car suddenly lost grip and Power spun. Expecting a heavy impact, Power took his hands of the steering wheel before walloping the outside wall.

The damaged car driven by Will Power slides after hitting the wall in the first turn during the 108th Indianapolis 500.

"Just got high, got loose, got in the wall," said James Hinchcliffe on commentary.

"We've seen so many drivers hanging up on the outside there. That's going to be a key bit of information for all the spotters to tell their driver, 'Hey look, Will was just running outside of Rasmussen and the car got away from him. The track is starting to fall away up there."

"Townsend Bell added, "We kept wondering how the track is clean enough and I think we've finally found the point of this race where the debris, the tyre dust, the marbles, are too much to handle too wide."
