Why Piastri could usurp race-winning teammate

Oscar Piastri is hopeful a full complement of new parts will give him a boost in this weekend's Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix.

His McLaren team introduced the upgraded parts onto teammate Lando Norris' car last time out in Miami, but Piastri only got about half of them.

Despite the discrepancy, the Aussie was hot on Norris' heels all weekend, and was even an outside chance to win the race had it not been for the safety car that proved so fortuitous for Norris to claim his maiden race win.

Despite Max Verstappen's Red Bull suffering minor damage after a collision with a trackside bollard, Piastri said Norris' ability to drive away from the three-time world champion had buoyed the team.

"I think (Norris' win) is a big boost for the whole team, it's something we've been working towards for the last twelve months, especially since we got back on track towards being at the front," he told Auto Action.

"So yeah, a big confidence boost for everybody and extra motivation."

Although the record books show a 13th place finish in Miami, Piastri said the whole weekend was one of his most competitive in his short F1 career.

And armed with the rest of the upgrades, he's heading into Imola brimming with confidence at a track he's never raced at in F1.

Last year's race was called off due to heavy flooding in the area.

But Piastri's isn't the only car with new parts this weekend.

Ferrari has been talking up the upgrade package for its home race for much of the season, with fans hopeful of an outright three-car fight for the win between Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren.

While the Ferrari was visibly different when it was first seen in the paddock during set-up, team principal Fred Vasseur said the team wasn't expecting the upgrades to be a "game changer".

"We go for development, and once we are ready, we produce parts," he said.

"The fact Imola is close to the factory also helps … because we can release the parts a little later.

"We don't expect that it will be a game changer, but it is so close together that this can bring performance."

But he said the performance of the car itself wasn't the only thing Ferrari needed to improve.

Ferrari fans have been tormented for much of the past two decades as the team battled unreliability and a knack of making terrible on-the-fly strategy decisions. Together, they've arguably cost the Scuderia two world championships.

"It is true that if you have four or five cars within one tenth in qualifying, if you can bring one tenth with you, it will be a game changer for the weekend," Vasseur said.

"But a large part of the result is also due to what we do with the drivers and the setup of the car during the weekend.

"We don't just have to think about upgrades and development, it's also the work we do on the track."

Imola will host the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix barely a fortnight since the 30th anniversary of Ayrton Senna's death at the same venue.

Practice begins on Friday night, with the race to get underway at 11pm Sunday (AEST).
