Roosters fume as Fifita backflips on $3.3m deal

The Roosters have sensationally withdrawn their offer for barnstorming backrower David Fifita.

It was reported last Thursday the Origin star had signed with the Sydney club from 2025 on a four-year deal.

On Wednesday morning the Roosters issued a statement saying the offer was no longer on the table.

The Titans then confirmed he will remain on the glitter strip until the end of 2026.

"I'm extremely grateful for the time and interest shown in me over the past two weeks, but upon further reflection, I have made the decision that I want to remain a Titan beyond 2024," Fifita said.

"I'm excited about the direction the team is taking and being close to home, and my family has been central to helping me make this decision."

The Sydney Morning Herald reported last week powerful Chooks chairman Nick Politis almost pulled the $3.3 million offer on Wednesday night when he became disgruntled at waiting for an answer.

The Roosters were clearly filthy with the player's backflip.

"Despite his management making the initial approach to the club and Fifita personally informing the Sydney Roosters' chairman and head coach of his intent to join the club last Thursday, Fifita has since expressed doubt about his decision," the statement said.

"Consequently, the club has elected to withdraw its offer with view that it is in the Roosters' best interests.

"The club wishes Fifita all the best."

Fifita had been weighing up offers from them and Penrith, while he also had an option with Gold Coast for 2025 worth $1m.

Fifita initially joined Gold Coast in 2020 on a whopping $1.25m a season but he has struggled to live up to that price tag as the Titans have floundered.

Wednesday's announcement also indicates the Roosters may yet offer Angus Crichton a new deal.

Crichton is off contract and was disgruntled at the Fifita signing last week, given he has returned to top form this year.

The Chooks also have gun backrowers Sitili Tupouniua and Siua Wong signed for several more years.
