'Unlucky' Broncos star facing sanction for risky act

Broncos centre Kotoni Staggs will face a nervous wait after he was put on report for a dangerous tackle in the Broncos' 30-14 win over the Eels.

In the 35th minute, Staggs lifted Eels fullback Blaize Talagi and drove him into the turf with a dominant tackle but was penalised for the act.

League icon Phil Gould believes Staggs was slightly hard done by.

"It's unlucky, it's very unlucky," he said on Nine's coverage.

"Really read it well, came in hard, bang."

Staggs is unlikely to face suspension after Bulldogs hooker Reed Mahoney was hit with a $2,500 fine for a similar tackle on Solomon Alaimalo last week.

Brisbane started the match trailing 2-0 after an early penalty goal to Parramatta. However, the Broncos fought back to lead 12-2 after 26 minutes with Reece Walsh and Deine Mariner scoring.

Both sides then went try for try with Eels youngster impressing Gould in the 32nd minute when he went over.

"I think maybe a star's been born here," he said.

Mariner scored his second right on half-time to make it 18-8 at the break.

Parramatta scored first after the break through Dylan Brown, however that'd be the last points from the home side.

Ezra Mam and Selwyn Cobbo scored two brilliant tries to round off the second half and deliver a 30-14 loss.

Cobbo's 'brilliant' try stuns Gould

Despite the defeat for Parramatta, Gould believes there's brighter days ahead for the side despite the side sitting well outside the top eight.

"I thought Parramatta were quite gutsy, and when Mitchell Moses comes back it's going to solve a lot of their problems," he said.

Along with the slight concern for Staggs, the Broncos also lost Billy Walters in the first half due to a wrist injury with the hooker failing to return.
