Former AFL star found dead at age 29

Former Fremantle and Greater Western Sydney player Cameron McCarthy has died at the age of 29.

Western Australia police on Friday confirmed a death, with The Age and WA media reporting it was McCarthy.

"About 6:15pm yesterday, Thursday 9 May 2024, emergency services were called to an address in Lake Coogee," police said.

"Upon arrival, it was confirmed a 29-year-old male was deceased.

"The death is being treated as non-suspicious. A report will be prepared for the coroner."

McCarthy was drafted with pick 14 in 2013 and played 21 games for the Giants in Sydney, but requested a trade home to Perth due to homesickness.

He was granted the trade and joined Fremantle at the end of 2016.

McCarthy was the club's leading goal kicker in 2017 and played 49 games for the Dockers in total before being cut at the end of 2020.

Midway through the 2020 season McCarthy collapsed at training, and was later diagnosed with epilepsy.

"Cam is remembered as not just a prodigious football talent but as a popular, compassionate and caring person who had time for everyone at our club," South Fremantle said in a statement.

"He will be dearly missed."

The Dockers will reportedly wear black armbands during Friday night's game against the Swans at Optus Stadium.
