'I have to be honest': Slam winner to quit after sad decline

Former US Open champion Dominic Thiem is reportedly set to retire from professional tennis at the end of the season.

According to Austrian publication Salzburger Nachrichten, Thiem, 30, will play his last match at his home tournament at the Vienna Open in October.

The former world No.3 has been dogged by injury the past few years and last week revealed his recent wrist injury has still not healed properly.

"As I said in my last interview, I'm not the player of 2020 anymore," he wrote on Instagram.

"I have to deal with the current situation, with the fact that my wrist doesn't give me the strength it used to.

"I have to be honest with myself. The pain is a lot less compared to the last few weeks, but like I said, I haven't regained my full strength."

Thiem, twice a French Open finalist, also made the 2020 Australian Open final before claiming the US Open in front of an empty stadium the same year, which was heavily impacted by COVID.

But the following year disaster struck with the star hampered by a knee issue, before the wrist problem ended his season and sidelined him for nine months.

Thiem has struggled since returning, clawing his way to a top ranking of 72 in 2023. He's currently ranked 117.

The Austrian had an admirable record against game's biggest stars, winning five of seven in his career head-to-head record against Roger Federer, six of 16 against Rafael Nadal and five of 12 matches against Novak Djokovic.

He's currently ranked outside the top 100, meaning he won't automatically qualify for the French Open.
