Kostya, Tim Tszyu 'reunite' ahead of blockbuster

Tim Tszyu has reunited with his father Kostya as he begins preparations for the toughest fight of his career against Vergil Ortiz in Los Angeles, August 4 AEST.

On Monday, the former WBO super welterweight champion announced the pair had linked up with a clip posted on social media showing them embracing.

"Long time in the making," Tim captioned the video clip.

He later posted a photo with Kostya to X.

"Reunited," he wrote.

"Time for the old man to teach the young buck some new tricks.

"I am coming into this camp with a whole new mindset. Kill or be Killed. Back to old school. The roots I grew up in."

It's understood Kostya will spend at least two weeks with Tim at his training camp in Thailand.

Kostya planned to be at Tim's recent blockbuster bout with Sebastian Fundora in Las Vegas, but logistical issues got in the way.

It's the first time father and son have seen each other in person since 2019, when Tszyu fought Jack Brubaker.

There's no official word yet on whether Kostya will be in Tim's corner for the Ortiz fight or if he'll be in Tim's training camp as the event draws closer.

Kostya, a boxing Hall-of-Famer, lives in Russia and opened a restaurant in his native country post-retirement, leaving his Australian life behind over ten years ago.

Tszyu will square off with Ortiz, on the undercard of the Terence Crawford vs Israil Madrimov, for Madrimov's WBA super welterweight belt.

The fight against Ortiz is easily the toughest of his career, with the American recording a 100 per cent knockout ratio. On top of that, his style is very similar to Tszyu's, with both fighters moving forward aggressively.

Ortiz's promoter, boxing icon Oscar de la Hoya, is predicting fireworks when his fighter meets the Aussie.

"With Tim Tszyu, it's going to be a war," De la Hoya said.

"I'm a thousand per cent confident in my guy, but you can't sleep on Tim Tszyu.

"I love his style, his aggression, and his power. This fight will be a clash of the titans.

"Vergil Ortiz stopping this fight in one round will give him the confidence to go back to the gym and I promise you, he will knock Tim Tszyu out."
