Axed Cook set for call-up as Souths make changes

Jason Demetriou has recalled veteran South Sydney star Damien Cook to the team for Thursday night's battle against the Melbourne Storm.

The Rabbitohs coach axed the star hooker before the club's round six clash against the Cronulla Sharks – a match they ended up losing, dumping Cook to play in the NSW Cup.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports Cook is expected to be named on the bench for the upcoming Anzac Day clash, with Peter Mamouzelos remaining favourite to start in the No.9 jersey.

The 32-year-old hooker pushed his case to make a return to the squad during his match in the NSW Cup team and his application in training.

Cook did not play in the reserve grade competition over the weekend as Souths had a bye.

The Rabbitohs star is just shy of making his 200th NRL appearance, revealing he owes his possible return to the performance and drive of the NSW Cup side.

Jacob Gagai is expected to make his second appearance for the side this season, replacing the injured Tyrone Munro on the wing.

Jai Arrow revealed that he will also be returning to the side for the first time since their round-one loss in Las Vegas.

The star forward said he is excited to make his return and has undergone contact tests during training this week to ensure his return to play is smooth sailing.

"Things are going good, rehab's been smooth sailing and I'm looking to return next week against Melbourne," Arrow said speaking on Triple M Breakfast.

"I'm really excited. I've been put through tests this week with contact and I got through everything pretty well.

"I'm excited to be out there and play footy again."
