Reds bomb golden chance after Barrett red card

The Queensland Reds are rueing a major missed opportunity after a heartbreaking golden point loss to the Hurricanes on Sunday.

Reserve Hurricanes prop Pasilio Tosi crashed over for the match winning try deep into extra time in a thrilling 38-33 conclusion to an entertaining Super Round at Melbourne's AAMI Park.

It came after Hurricanes star Jordie Barrett was sent off in his 100th match for a high shot on Jordan Petaia.

Jordie Barrett and Jordan Petaia clash.

"Jordy, I hope you recover well mate," Barrett said on Stan Sport's coverage.

"I'm not sure who wrote that script tonight but I'm incredibly proud of the boys that dug deep and got us over the line."

Barrett is likely staring at a long ban for the high tackle.

Reds coach Les Kiss is also sweating on the availability of concussed centre Hunter Paisami ahead of Saturday's home clash with the ladder leading Chiefs.

"He (Petaia) seems OK at the moment," Kiss told Stan Sport.

"But it's obviously a big hit and we'll monitor him. We've got a short turnaround, so do the Chiefs… but what they did earlier today (46-12 win over the Brumbies) – we've got some work to do."

The 1-1 Reds sit fourth on the Super Rugby Pacific ladder and showed plenty of heart to stay with the high octane Hurricanes.

But Kiss knows they let Clark Laidlaw's side off the hook given they had to play with 14 men for 20 minutes.

"The heart was there for sure," Kiss said.

The Reds look dejected after the loss.

"I thought our forward pack was very good today, particularly when we got them down on the try line.

"They really hunkered in and did the job for us. We were probably a little bit untidy with what we did outside of that.

"I don't think we lost it in extra time. I think we didn't win it when we had to in the 80 (minutes) and they're a tough team to play."
