Lyon sets Shield record with magic spell

Nathan Lyon produced his best ever bowling figures in Sheffield Shield cricket as New South Wales rolled Victoria for 200.

After NSW was bowled out for 165 on day one, Victoria today failed to capitalise, taking just a 35-run first innings lead due to Lyon's figures of 6-21. He was responsible for dismissing Marcus Harris, Matthew Short, James Pattinson, Will Sutherland, Mitchell Perry and Jon Holland.

Today's performance for 33-year-old Lyon was a fresh reminder of just how damaging he can be following his disappointing performance with figures of 1-65 and 2-85 during the Gabba Test against India last month.

"An immensely exhausting week … I had a couple of weeks off after the Gabba Test and a pretty hectic summer," he told AAP.

"It was quite nice to come home and have some downtime, live a normal life … get away from cricket."

NSW is currently 1-22 after stumps, trailing by 13 runs with Lyon sent in as nightwatchman.

Lyon's NSW teammate and Australian paceman, Mitchell Starc, produced another lacklustre performance.

Starc, who took just 11 wickets at 40.72 against India during the Test series, conceded 44 off his first six overs and finished with 0-71 from 14 overs.

Former Test batsman Nic Maddinson took a liking to the tall left-armer, smashing 32 runs off 19 balls against Starc.

Maddinson finished with a knock of 77 from 80 balls, with Harris (24), captain Peter Handscomb (24) and Short (30) all unable to do much of the heavy lifting.
