A freak accident involving a knife has left Geelong Cats legend Steve Johnson lucky to be alive.
Johnson, who kicked 516 goals from 293 games with the Cats and Giants, was taken to Wangaratta hospital on Monday night with a deep wound to his stomach.
It's believed Johnson was opening a gate at his property with a knife he was carrying in a bag somehow pierced through the bag and into his abdomen.

Luckily for the three-time premiership gun, he has a nurse as a neighbour, and they were able to apply pressure to the rapidly bleeding wound before he was taken to hospital, where he remains.
While he has some damage to his bowel, Johnson is expected to make a full recovery.
Johnson was awarded the Norm Smith Medal in the 2007 grand final and is a three-time All-Australian.
Johnson left the Cats at the end of 2015 before spending the final two seasons of his career at GWS.
He then moved into coaching roles with the Swans and Giants.
He moved into bush footy for the 2022 season and led the Yarrawonga Pigeons to the flag in the Ovens and Murray Football League in his second season at the helm.
"The YFNC would like to wish our Senior Coach, Steve Johnson a quick and full recovery from his accident on Monday night," the Pigeons said in a club statement.
"As you may be aware Steve suffered a nasty stomach wound in a freak accident.
"He has been treated at the Wangaratta Hospital and like all things, time will heal.
"Our thoughts go out to Steve and Erin and their extended families."
