Why BBL veteran is calling for schedule shake-up

Sydney Sixers batter Jordan Silk has backed the push for a Big Bash League fixture on Christmas Day, admitting the players are "ready" to take the next step.

After the NBL introduced Christmas games last year and continuing the trend again this past Monday, there have been increased talks of BBL decision-makers adding their own.

While there was no game on the 24th or 25th, the competition held two games on Boxing Day at the conclusion of the Test, with a bumper crowd arriving in Perth to watch the Scorchers.

Speaking to SEN, Silk – who has been a staple in the magenta kit for a large majority of their history – agreed with the calls for a revamp to the BBL schedule.

"I think we are ready for it," he said.

"You are always looking for something to watch that afternoon.

"After you're done playing backyard cricket, you want to put your feet up, have a beer. It'd be a nice lead-in to the Boxing Day Test.

"The more we see other codes taking up Christmas Day games, it'll only get spoken about more and more … I'm all for it.

"I can't speak for all players, but certainly watching or participating in a live cricket game on Christmas could be a pretty cool tradition."

The 31-year-old has been in solid form early in the season, making valuable contributions in the middle-order, highlighted by his match-winning 66* against the Adelaide Strikers.

While the BBL held no games on either of the major Christmas nights, Adelaide will again host a New Year's Eve fixture on Sunday night, with fans in the City of Churches flocking to see their side play in recent years.
