Call made on result of farcical BBL abandonment

The BBL match between the Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers abandoned due to the state of the Geelong wicket will not be rescheduled.

The match on December 10 was abandoned in the seventh over after heavy rain the day before the match leaked through the covers at GMHBA Stadium.

The "drenched" wicket produced horribly inconsistent bounce – particularly from a spot just outside off-stump at one end.

A Will Sutherland delivery on a length that ballooned through to Renegades 'keeper Quinton de Kock was the final straw before umpires intervened and stopped the match.

In a statement on Sunday morning, Cricket Australia said "various options" were explored to reschedule the match.

"(But) it became apparent rescheduling would be challenging due to a variety of factors, including the existing schedule across the two clubs and limited access to venues," it read.

Each side will be awarded a point. It was the first time in 555 BBL games a match had been abandoned due to an unsafe pitch. 

Footage captured fans throwing KFC buckets onto the ground when the game was officially cancelled.

Both the Renegades and Cricket Australia promised fans refunds immediately after the match.

A review into circumstances leading up to the abandonment is continuing.
