Teen shocks Aus Open field with rare albatross

A 16-year-old amateur has lit up the scoreboard on the third morning of the Australian Open, hitting a rare albatross.

In calm but muggy conditions, Ann Jang made the rare two on the first hole of The Australian Golf Club in Sydney's east, which plays as a par-five for the women this week.

Having started the morning at three-over, that one shot took her back to even-par for the tournament, before she dipped into red figures with a birdie on the par-4 seventh.

She sat in a tie for eighth place as she approached the turn, still some eight shots off overnight leader Jiyai Shin, who will begin her third round this afternoon.

Ann Jang hit an albatross on the par-five 1st hole during the third round of the Australian Open.

Elsewhere, Calum Hill became the second player this week to hit a hole-in-one, draining his tee shot at the par-3 11th.

Having shot back-to-back 70s at The Australian and The Lakes in his first two rounds, Hill arrived at the 11th one-under for the day.

The Scot hit a smooth 7-iron on the 174m hole.

His eagle took him to three-under, and six-under for the tournament. It tied him for 16th, six shots back from leader Min Woo Lee.

The leaders in both the men's and women's competitions will tee off on Saturday afternoon.

After the first two rounds were split across The Lakes and The Australian due to the massive field size, weekend action will be played exclusively at The Australian.

Coverage starts on 9now and Gem from midday (AEDT).
