The long-time manager and business partner of Los Angeles superstar LeBron James, admitted to betting on NBA games through an illegal bookie, reports The Washington Post.
During an interview with federal agents in 2021, Maverick Carter said he "could not remember placing any bets on the Lakers" and denied placing bets for others, according to documents reviewed by the publication.
Authorities were looking into bookie Wayne Nix, who has since pleaded guilty to charges related to running an offshore sports-betting ring.

"In 2021 and before 38 states and the District of Columbia legalised sports betting, Maverick Carter was interviewed a single time by federal law enforcement regarding their investigation into Wayne Nix," Adam Mendelsohn, a spokesperson for Carter and James, said in a statement to The Washington post.
"Mr. Carter was not the target of the investigation, cooperated, was never charged, and never contacted again on the matter."
According to the report, Carter declined to answer questions about James, saying Carter's wagering "has nothing to do with him."
The report states Carter said he placed approximately 20 bets on football and basketball games over the course of a year, with each bet ranging from $5,000 to $10,000 (USD).
Carter, 42, has known James since their childhood days in Akron, Ohio. They are minority owners in the Boston Red Sox and English Premier League club Liverpool and co-own a media company valued at hundreds of millions of dollars.
NBA players, team officials and league officials are prohibited from betting on games. The National Basketball Players Association also prohibits agents from wagering, however, business managers are not included by either group.
