Origin hero's surprise NRL return confirmed

From Orange, to the Central Coast, Sydney, Melbourne, New Zealand and France.

James Maloney hasn't been shy of a sea or tree change throughout his career, and now the NRL premiership winner has lined up his latest move after signing with the North Queensland Cowboys as an assistant coach.

The champion half will join the club on a two-year deal, specialising with the club's attack as they look to play finals football again in 2024.

Maloney joins head coach Todd Payten and assistants Justin Morgan and Ben Rauter on the coaching staff after finishing his playing career in May with Lezignan in the French Elite One competition.

"We are excited at the prospect of the new dimension James will add to our program," Cowboys general manager of football, Micheal Luck, said.

"With an experienced assistant in Justin Morgan coming on board this year, we made the decision to target a younger coach with recent experience on the field to focus on our attack.

"We met with Jimmy in Townsville last week and we were impressed with how he presented and the ideas he had to improve our team.

"He will be an excellent sounding board for our spine, in particular our young halves in Tom Dearden, Tom Duffy and Jake Clifford."

Maloney played in 247 NRL games where he won premierships with the Roosters in 2013 and Sharks in 2016.

Previously he'd played at the Storm and Warriors before finishing his NRL career at the Panthers.

The half then played 42 matches at Catalans Dragons in the Super League.

The 37-year-old also won two State of Origin series with NSW and played for the Kangaroos three times.
