Summer of tennis' opener gets makeover

The second edition of the United Cup will look a little different, with the tennis tournament to be held in two Australian cities on opposite sides of the country.

Tennis Australia has announced both Sydney and Perth will host the mixed-team event from December 29 to January 7.

There will be 18 countries competing for the United Cup, with the New South Wales and Western Australia capital cities to house nine teams each.

Each team includes up to three men and up to three women. The countries are divided into six pools of three teams each.

The three group winners in each city, as well as the one best pool runner-up, will enter the quarter-finals, before Sydney hosts the semi-finals and then the final.

The event offers a minimum $15 million in prizemoney, as well as 500 WTA and ATP rankings points.

"After the brilliance of the inaugural United Cup in 2023, I'm delighted the mixed team event will return to Sydney and Perth in 2024," United Cup director Stephen Farrow said.

"The United Cup holds a unique position in global tennis, with the world's best men and women representing their country at the highest level. Eighteen teams, featuring some of the biggest personalities in the sport, will play across two cities for big prizemoney and big ranking points.

"We saw this year how passionate and intense the crowds were in supporting the United Cup – it was tennis at its very best. That's what it's all about and we can't wait to bring that excitement and energy back to Sydney and Perth this summer."

The United Cup draw will take place on October 23.
