'Gutted' Swans skipper breaks silence on 'bad mistake'

Sydney Swans co-captain Callum Mills has broken his silence on a Mad Monday mishap that threatens to ruin the start of his 2024 AFL season.

The 26-year-old required surgery on a rotator cuff in his shoulder after tearing it while wrestling a teammate during post-season celebrations.

The club publicly admonished the skipper and on Wednesday he fronted media to speak about the incident.

"I'm gutted that this will potentially put the start of my season at risk, but one thing I do want to assure people is I'm doing everything I possibly can to get back as quick as possible," Mills said.

"And for Swans fans, I want to make it really clear that this will not deter my, nor my teammates', commitment to chasing success in 2024."

Sydney Swans co-captain Callum Mills at a press conference to talk about his injury.

Mills was pressed on exactly what happened at Mad Monday, but the gun midfielder refused to divulge details.

"As I said, I made a bad mistake," he said.

"As soon as I found the results, I went into (coach John Longmire's) office and told him exactly what happened, and as you can imagine, he was extremely disappointed, as am I in myself.

"It was extremely hard, but that's the respect I have for Horse (Lonmire), to be able to own it and take full responsibility.

"It was quite an innocuous accident. The next couple of days, I didn't know what I'd done, how bad it was.

"It was a bad mistake, and it's extremely frustrating and I'm gutted that this is the result."

The incident prompted some commentators to call for Mills to be stripped of the co-captaincy.

He says no such conversation has taken place with Longmire or his teammates yet.

"I think that's a discussion for the club to have, we haven't had those discussions," Mills said.

"What I will say is I absolutely love leading this club, it's something I hold clearly deep to my heart, and it's something I love doing. It's a position that I don't take for granted."
