Collingwood slapped with fine despite quitting comp

Collingwood has been slapped with a $10,000 fine for illegal netball activities despite no longer having any involvement in the sport.

Super Netball announced in a statement on Thursday that Collingwood had been fined for breaching the league's competition rules during the 2022 player-signing period.

The statement said the club had been fined for "including additional services agreements as part of letters of offer to a number of players".

"The Collingwood Magpies have accepted the fine," the statement added.

The Magpies have paid a price for illegal netball conduct despite the fact they withdrew their Super Netball licence at the end of the 2023 season, which was brought to a close by the grand final on July 8.

"Collingwood is a better place for having had a netball team," said Collingwood chief executive Craig Kelly in a statement in May.

"The decision to not renew our netball licence has been an incredibly difficult one which has weighed heavily on us."

Collingwood's now-defunct netball team.

Following Collingwood's announcement in May that it would not renew its licence, Super Netball chief executive Kelly Ryan made a damning assessment of the club's commitment to the sport.

"In recent times it had become clear that Collingwood's priorities had shifted away from netball to focus on its core business of football," Ryan said.

"We are understanding of the impact Collingwood's decision has on its current players and staff and we will support them during this time."

It was revealed on Tuesday that Collingwood's replacement in Super Netball would be called the Melbourne Mavericks.

From the moment Collingwood announced it would be fleeing Super Netball, the league made it clear that another club would join the competition to ensure it remained an eight-team tournament.
