Matildas' road map to World Cup round of 16 revealed

The Matildas had the best-case scenario in their sights – a one-way ticket for the final 16 with a game to spare.

Finishing with a 3-2 loss in their second group B match, here is what needs to happen for the Matildas to rescue their FIFA Women's World Cup campaign and advance to the round of 16.

  • If Australia defeat Canada and Nigeria lose to the Republic of Ireland on Monday, the Matildas will top group B and meet England or Denmark in the next round.
  • If Australia defeat Canada, with Nigeria also claiming victory over the Republic of Ireland, the Matildas will finish second in group B and face England or Denmark in the next round.
  • If Australia draw with Canada and Nigeria lose to the Republic of Ireland by two or more goals, the Matildas will finish second in group B and face England or Denmark in the next round.
  • If Australia draw with Canada and Nigeria lose to the Republic of Ireland by one goal, or the match is drawn, Australia will be eliminated from the tournament.
  • If Australia draw with Canada on anything higher than one goal a piece and Nigeria lose to the Republic of Ireland by a goal, the Matildas will finish second in group B on goals scored.

If Australia lose to Canada, the Matildas will be bundled out of their home World Cup.
