Script flipped as fumbling Bairstow takes 'worldy of a catch'

Very little is separating England and Australia at stumps on day one of the fourth Ashes Test.

The Australians are 8-299 at the close of play after Ben Stokes sent the tourists in to bat for the third Test in a row.

Stuart Broad claimed the wicket of Travis Head to become just the fifth man in history to take 600 wickets in the longest format.

Under-fire Bairstow takes a ripper

Jonny Bairstow's wicketkeeping has been awful in this Ashes series.

Dropped catches and missed stumpings have hurt England, leading to Sir Geoffrey Boycott calling for Bairstow's axing ahead of the fourth Test, in a column for the UK Telegraph.

But the 33-year-old pulled off a stunner of a catch on day one of the Old Trafford Test, diving low and at full stretch to his right and plucking a one-handed catch.

His phenomenal piece of fielding, which commentator Nasser Hussain described as "a worldy of a catch", sent Mitchell Marsh on his way for 51.
